Museum of Guadalajara

Plaza de España, Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

The Museum of Guadalajara includes Fine Arts, Archaeological and Ethnographic collections focused on preserving the cultural heritage of Guadalajara Province. It was opened in 1838, making it the oldest provincial museum in the country. The Museum is housed in the Palacio del Infantado that was the seat of the Dukes of the Infantando when it was built at the end of the 15th century. The design and decorations include a strong Islamic influence; the highlights are the carved limestone facade and the patio of the Lions (which can be visited for free).

Access & Transport

The Museum / Palace are on Plaza de España, 1.6km south of Guadalajara main train station. The city can be accessed in 1h with the C2 suburban train line from Madrid's Atocha Station By car from Madrid, it is straight on the A2 all the way, taking exit 51 to get into the city.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a discovery of the rest of the city (covered in separate reviews) and maybe try the Guadalajara Zoo if you have younger children with you.

Meta review

Reviews for the museum are pretty average: visitors enjoy the cheap entrance fee and the variety of topics tackled but, besides a mammut and a few tombs, there doesn't seem to be a lot of impressive items on display and it is quite small + there aren't many sign / information boards in English or other foreign language.

Environmental & Social

Minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Spreads culture and preserves some of the region's artefacts.

Conclusion

The Regional Museum of Guadalajara is nice but too small to work as an anchor activity so we would advise travellers to add it as a short cultural activity when visiting the rest of the city. Don't expect top-tier exhibits but you'll learn a few things about the Province of Guadalajara.

Key positive

Cheap entrance fees and centrally located in the city

Key negative

No famous artefacts to attract more visitors

Suitability

Suitable for all ages but best for children aged 10 and above. We could not find any information regarding accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility but we presume it isn't an issue
