Big Wave Bay, Hong Kong

Big Wave Bay Road, Shek O, Hong Kong Island

Description

Located in the southeast of HK Island, just north of Shek-O, Big Wave Bay owes its name to the decent-size waves that makes it one of the most popular beaches with surfers in the whole of Hong Kong territory. It also forms the starting point (or the end) of the Dragon's Back hiking trail.

Access & Transport

By public transport, one should alight at Shau Kei Wan station, near the eastern end of the Island line and take the minibus 9 from there. It covers Shek-O road all the way to the Big Wave Bay parking lot and then Shek-O village. Taxi will be faster and might be a good idea for small groups / families.

Instructions & Recommendations

It's the beach and the sun can be strong in Hong Kong so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and some water. On weekends and during the summer months, it will be difficult to find some parking space taxi and bus are best - there may be a queue for the latter on the way back. There are some shops renting out surf boards near the beach

Meta review

The beach is mostly popular as a surfing spot and a good place to relax after hiking the Dragon's back trail - those are the main positive aspects highlighted by reviewers. Negative comments center around the facts that it gets very busy on weekends (in the summer) and that there is a lack of food options.

Environmental & Social

Green activity and socially neutral

Conclusion

The best surfing beach for those located on HK Island, it also has a more "off the beaten track" atmosphere than its Shek-O neighbour and will attract a different crowd of regulars. By itself, not a must do, but coupled with Dragon's back, it is a great outdoor option.

Key positive

A great combo option with Dragon's Back hike

It can be a good surfing spot, especially as international cities go

Key negative

Going by public transport is long

Not a very wide beach and limited parking so need to avoid busy days

Suitability

Suitable for surfers and not recommended for families with young children due to the rocks, waves, current and apprentice surfers. No accessibility restrictions but parking is a few minutes' walk from the beach
