Causeway Bay shopping district

Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island

Description

Causeway Bay covers the area east of Wan Chai until Tin Hau, which includes Victoria Park. It is famed for its shopping district centred around the Causeway Bay MTR and Times Square, which is one of the world's most expensive in terms of rent. Historically - before reclamation work - it was a heavily stilted bay over which a causeway was built (hence the name) located around what is now Tin Hau. Victoria Park includes sport infrastructures such as a swimming pool and tennis courts and is (was) also regularly used as a gathering point for demonstrations. For this review however, the Tin Hau area is not covered - only the shopping district and Victoria Park.

Access & Transport

The area is centrally located on HK Island northern shore and is served by Causeway Bay MTR station (Island line), bus services and the tramway line.

Instructions & Recommendations

The focus here really is shopping but, for sightseeing, it is best to also include Victoria Park in the process with a follow-on walk to Happy Valley or Tin Hau.

Meta review

Causeway Bay gets mostly positive reviews from people who went there shopping - they enjoy the large amount of department stores, the numerous eating options and the central location. Negative reviews point out that prices are internationally not very competitive and that the Causeway Bay side is very crowded.

Environmental & Social

Urban concrete neighbourhoods are never the most environment friendly, by their very nature (high concentration of mercantile activities, little green spaces). The Times Square side is mostly commercial and has priced out most of the original residents.

Conclusion

Causeway Bay is very popular with shoppers in Hong Kong and Asia although the prices there are not that competitive due to the high rents in the area. For non-shoppers, it is just plain crowded and we would not recommend spending much time there. The Tin Hau area across Victoria Park is much more "local" and the Happy Valley neighbourhood just south with its famous race course has a bit of a village feel - both are a lot more interesting to visit for non-shoppers.
