Hong Kong Maritime Museum

11 Man Kwong Street, Central, Hong Kong Island

Description

The Hong Kong Maritime Museum covers the establishment of Hong Kong as a Pearl River Delta port, the opium wars and trade with China and British colonization - up to the present day and its technologically advanced modern port infrastructure. It also provides technical and historical information about the development of boats and ships. Exhibits include old nautical instruments, plenty of maps and the replica of the first junk to have reached New York in 1847.

Access & Transport

Since 2013, the museum is located at Central Pier 8, close to the Star Ferry Pier 7. Pier 8 was previously used for the Star Ferry service to Hung Hom It is quite easy to get to with Hong Kong and Central MTR stations both within short walking distance and the Star Ferry providing quick access to the Tsim Sha Tsui area in Kowloon.

Instructions & Recommendations

Great option when visiting Central or using the TST to Central cross-harbour ferry (Star Ferry).

Meta review

The Maritime Museum gets overall very positive reviews, including families with kids. People like the location and well laid out exhibits and galleries. A minority of reviewers do not find the museum to be of real interest and some think it lacks exhibits / explanations about the mechanical and propulsion aspects of ships.

Environmental & Social

The museum is a non-profit society and Cafe 8 is run by the Nesbitt Centre which provides employment opportunities to people with learning difficulties (https://www.nesbittcentre.org.hk/) Very small carbon footprint linked to the museum operations

Conclusion

The Hong Kong Maritime Museum is quite educational and works well as a general and speciality museum (for those history and/or maritime buffs). The content and displays should even prove interesting for children with some visually interactive galleries and exhibitions, in particular the morse code transmitter. This is a welcome variation to the "traditional" science, history and art museums travellers can find in most major cities.
