LKF & Soho - dinner & night

Staunton Street, Central, Hong Kong Island

Description

Lan Kwai Fong, usually abbreviated as "LKF", is a small rectangular area formed by Lan Kwai Fong street and D'Aguilar street, about 200m uphill from Central MTR. It is well know as a dining, drinking and clubbing area, popular with tourists and expats as well as for occasions like New Year Eve and Halloween. SoHo is located between LKF and the Sheung Wan neighbourhood - the name is derived from its location: South of Hollywood road. Prior to the mid-levels escalator construction, the area was populated by many elderly locals and porcelain shops; now it mostly consists of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, art galleries and antique stores (on Staunton Street and Elgin Street). The signposted Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail snakes through but, unfortunately, most of the sites from Dr Sun's past have long been razed, replaced by concrete skyscrapers.

Access & Transport

It is very easy to get to LFK and SoHo, the best way is to take the MTR up to Central or Hong Kong station and then walk for 10 mins. The mid-levels escalator can be used.

Instructions & Recommendations

Both those areas mostly come alive in the evening so that's when we would recommend you visit. If you are planning to go on a Friday or Saturday evening, it is best to book your restaurant table in advance. LKF is happening until the early morning hours.

Meta review

SoHo gets excellent reviews as a dining area with some cultural touches whilst LKF is still one of the best places to party in town but quite a few reviewers point out that it is not as trendy as it used to be and getting seedy

Environmental & Social

Urban concrete neighbourhoods are never the most environment friendly, by their very nature (high concentration of mercantile activities, little green spaces) SoHo's success has priced-out many of the previous shops and residents and LKF nightlife brings some social issues with it

Conclusion

SoHo is an area that deserves a visit, in between Man Mo Temple and Tai Kwun Centre - it is a good place for dinner if you don't mind the busy feel of the streets. LKF on the other hand has nothing to see besides people going out / drinking at night so much more of place to experience rather than a neighbourhood to visit

Key positive

Both areas are easily accessible by public transport / walking

Some good and diverse dining options

Key negative

Like most of urban Hong Kong, it is gritty and the charm may be lost on many

LKF is very drinking / partying oriented in the evening, with all the issues that come with such area

Suitability

Dinner in Soho is family friendly, but LFK is for the 18-50yrs old crowd. Theoretically accessible for people with reduced mobility but there are some steep streets, stairs and narrow treacherous pavement surfaces
