Man Mo temple - by Koreval
Description
Man Mo Temple, in Hong Kong Island, is dedicated to the gods of literature (Man) and war (Mo), wielding a brush and sword, respectively. It was built in 1847 and, to its west, Kung So was an assembly hall where the Chinese community used to settle its disputes. It is now a declared monument. Entering this Taoist temple, visitors will notice the hanging spirals of incense coils that create the smoky atmosphere - those are burned as offerings by worshippers.
Access & Transport
The temple is on Hollywood Road, in Mid-levels, which is very central. The best way to get there is to take the MTR up to Central, Hong Kong or Sheung Wan MTR station and then walk for 10-15mins, the mid-levels escalator can be used part of the way (not if coming from the Sheung Wan side).
Instructions & Recommendations
As with any place of worship, be extra respectful and do note that flash photography is not allowed inside the temple. It is recommended to include a visit to the temple as part of a broader walk in the lively Sheung Wan neighbourhood that includes many of the "historic" streets in the city. PMQ is just up the street and the Zoological and Botanical Gardens are nearby.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral It no longer has much impact on the community but it is part of the city's cultural heritage, so we deem this to be marginally positive from a social perspective.
Conclusion
The worshipping of the gods of war and literature makes for an intriguing combo and the history as a court of justice of sorts make this temple deservedly extremely popular in HK. In isolation, it is just one "good" Taoist temple, but it’s the background and history of the temple and the smell of the incense that makes it a very worthwhile visit.
Key positive
Easy to get to and in a touristy area (i.e. small time investment)
Makes for good pictures and very atmospheric inside
Good place to see the locals worship
Key negative
Overhyped by some tourist websites and brochures
Not very large and can get crowded
Suitability
No religious denomination restrictions. Visitors with reduced mobility may find it challenging as there are a few small steps at the entrance and spaces are tight inside.
