Repulse Bay Beach

Repulse Bay Road, Repulse Bay, Hong Kong Island

Description

Repulse Bay is one of Hong Kong's most famous beaches as well as one of its priciest residential areas. It is located on the southern shore of HK Island, less than 4km from the Aberdeen Tunnel and about the same distance west of Stanley. The origin of the name is unclear. During the battle of Hong Kong in 1942, Repulse Bay was an important strategic location, and the Japanese used the local hotel as an hospital. Visually, the beach is quite striking and at near 300m wide, it is quite large by HK standards, outside of the beaches in the Sai Kung Peninsula. It is large enough to play and kids and adults alike can enjoy the platforms in the ocean, about 150m from the shore.

Access & Transport

The closes MRT station is Ocean Park about 3.5km away so most people go by bus (most service departs from Central area) or by taxi. From the car park or bus stop it is a short walk to the beach

Instructions & Recommendations

It's the beach and the sun can be strong in Hong Kong so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and some water. It is best combined with a visit to Stanley village / market which is a short bus or taxi ride away

Meta review

Possibly the most popular beach on HK Island. Reviewers enjoy the ease of access and the cleanliness of the sand and water. The main downside pointed out by visitors is the crowding, in particular on weekends, and the impact it has on traffic in the area.

Environmental & Social

Green activity (not including the commercial and residential developments) and socially neutral

Conclusion

Repulse Bay Beach is easy to get to and definitely one of the nicest beaches on HK Island. However, the bay is clearly over-built, and some visitors may not enjoy that aspect and will prefer beaches further out such as Shek-O or Big Wave Bay, or those in the New Territories (Clearwater Bay / Sai Kung Peninsula)

Key positive

Very accessible from the city

Sheltered bay and wide sand area is good for kids

Lots of F&B options around

Key negative

No waves (if that is something you are looking for)

Suitability

Suitable for anybody who enjoys time at the beach. Kids / family friendly with clean sand, no waves and some food options in the village. The beach is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
