Zoological & Botanical Gardens, Hong Kong

Garden Road, Central, Hong Kong Island

Description

Located in the mid-levels area of Central, just below Victoria Peak, the Gardens contains a collection of around 900 species of plants, over 40 types of birds in the aviary and 25 species of small animals. There are some rare plant species in the gardens and the exhibition center includes some botanical information. At the southern entrance (Upper Albert Rd), there is a memorial arch dedicated to the Chinese who died assisting the Allies during the two world wars and a bronze statue of King George VI was erected in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of British colonial rule over Hong Kong (1941).

Access & Transport

The complex is only a 10-15' walk away from the lower Central / Admiralty area. It is also served by a few bus routes (but stops on Garden rd and Upper Albert rd)

Instructions & Recommendations

One of the few green areas in the Central district, this is a good spot for a break from the concrete jungle. The Park opens early morning but the green house and exhibition center only from 9h00 to 16h30. This activity is best combined with an exploration of the Central neighbourhood and a ride up on the the Peak Tram.

Meta review

Visitors enjoy the location and the absence of entrance fee. The main downsides regularly pointed out are the captivity conditions of the animals and the small size of the zoo.

Environmental & Social

The zoo has repeatedly come under criticism for its outdated facilities and inadequate, overcrowded conditions for the animals housed within its confines [source: Wikipedia] On the environmental front, it is green and non-polluting. We have insufficient data to assess the sustainability angle of the Fountains (water / electricity)

Conclusion

Not a must-see attraction but a good option for those with extra time in the city. It is centrally located and is a good alternative to the surrounding street life and concrete / metal buildings. Zoos are debatable as a concept but this one really needs to enlarge the space it provides to the animals.
