Clearwater Bay Beaches 1 & 2

Tai Au Mun Road, Clear Water Bay, New Territories

Description

The best beaches in the Clearwater Bay Peninsula in Hong Kong are called Clearwater Bay First Beach and Second Beach. The latter one is the largest and more easily accessible of the two (less stairs and parking lot next to it). They both have fine beige sand, gentle slopes, lifeguards and changing rooms. In season, they even have platforms about 200m from the shore for swimmers to rest and play on. They both have protective nets to keep potential intruders out and are quite popular with open water swimmers who have dedicated swimming lanes on the sides and at the back (furthest from the shore).

Access & Transport

Public transport is available (Green Mini Bus from the Tseung Kwan O / Po Lam area) but might be a bit lengthy, so for a group it may be worth using the MTR until Hang Hau (on the Tseung Kwan O line) and take a taxi from there for about HKD80. The 2nd Beach parking lot is the end of the line for the GMB 103 / 103M and bus 91 whereas the GMB 16 continues a bit further to Po Toi O village. Second beach is accessed by a couple of staircases from the parking and First Beach by a path from Second Beach or through a lengthy staircase off Clearwater Bay rd, close to its namesake bus stop.

Instructions & Recommendations

It's the beach and the sun can be strong in Hong Kong so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and some water. On crowded days don't expect to find parking space and be ready to wait in line for a space in the next bus on the way back. This activity is best combined with a hike to High Junk Peak or Lung Ha Wan.

Meta review

Reviews for both beaches are excellent with beachgoers highlighting the good maintenance and clear waters. The main negative comments relate to the long flights of stairs and the limited food and drinks options.

Environmental & Social

Green activity and socially neutral

Conclusion

Clearwater Bay First Beach and Second Beach are excellent options as city-beaches go. They can be accessed relatively easily; the sand is good and the water clean. It can also be coupled with a hike on the High Junk Peak or Lung Ha Wan trails for a great half or full day out.

Key positive

Good set up with free changing rooms, toilets and lifeguard

Great both for a casual dip but also for proper swimming thanks to the nets enclosures

Not central but still easily accessible by public transport and taxi

Key negative

Can get crowded and not much space to play beach games on the sand during the summer

Refreshment kiosk at Beach 2 could be upgraded and offer more F&B options

Suitability

Suitable for anybody who enjoys time at the beach and/or open water swimming. Kids / family friendly as there is little current and the beach is clean. Access will be challenging or impossible for people with reduced mobility due to the steep and long staircases down to the beaches (and back up).
