Lug Ha Wan trail - by Koreval

Description
The Clearwater Bay area in Hong Kong offers 2 hiking trails: Lung Ha Wan and High Junk Peak that are in proximity and can be walked back-to-back for those with good fitness and a bit of time. Lung Ha Wan starts at Tai Au Mun barbeque area and goes up to Tai Leng Tung Peak (c. 300m alt.) where there are some panoramic views over the Clearwater Bay area both towards Sai Kung and the CWB Country Club. It then goes down all the way to the Equestrian Center where the 2.5km trail ends. To go back it is a 2.3km gentle uphill walk along a narrow asphalt road to the Tai Au Mun roundabout on Clearwater Bay rd and then another 1.4km to the BBQ area and parking lot (if you need to get back to your car).
Access & Transport
The starts of the trails are easy enough to find but access by public transport can be a bit lengthy so it may be worth using the MTR until Hang Hau (on the Tseung Kwan O purple line) and take a taxi from there for about HKD50/70.
Instructions & Recommendations
The trail is single track dirt path and not smooth, so proper footwear is highly recommended and there is no water point so make sure you carry sufficient water, especially if temperatures are close to or above 30 deg. (keeping in mind the high humidity level in HK). The Lung Ha Wan trail is much shorter and more of a beginner's walk whereas the High Junk Peak takes significantly longer if done entirely, with quite a bit of cumulative elevation. It is possible to do both but taking the bus (or taxi) in between finishing and starting points probably makes sense to save some time walking on the road. You should take the opportunity of being in the area to spend some time at Clearwater Bay Beach 1 or 2.
Environmental & Social
Green activity and socially neutral
Conclusion
The High Junk Peak and Lung Ha Wan hiking trails in Clearwater Bay are both excellent options for a half day out enjoying some panoramic views. The latter one is a shorter more family friendly option whereas the former one takes longer and has quite a few stairs (mostly not concrete) on the way. Po Toi O village is also worth a visit and a lunch. The hikes are very popular with the area residents but not that well-known for those living on HK Island or Kowloon.
