Hong Kong Heritage Museum

1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin, New Territories

Description

The Hong Kong Heritage Museum showcases some of the city's history, art and culture over six permanent exhibits and some temporary ones. It also holds regular Cantonese opera performances in its in-house theatre and owns over 30,000 items related to that art.

Access & Transport

The museum sits along the Shing Mun river in Sha Tin. The easiest way to get there is by MTR, alighting at either Che Kung Temple (Tuen Ma line) or Sha Tin (East Rail line) from where it is a 5mins walk. It is also straightforward drive and there is parking on site.

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend earmarking about 1.5 to 2.5hr depending on your interest in the exhibits. It can form a good combo with the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, a walk or bike ride along the river or even with a hike to Lion's Rock or Tai Mo Shan.

Meta review

Visitors overall mostly enjoy the Bruce Lee and/or Cantonese Opera exhibits and the fact that entrance is free. Recurring negative comments relate to the journey time required for a visit and that the exhibits are overall not that interesting.

Environmental & Social

Most of the building's energy consumption is likely to be for air-conditioning (or heating during the short winter). Not a major carbon footprint on a per visitor basis though. Socially positive as it helps preserve the city's cultural heritage.

Conclusion

The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is worth a visit for those with plenty of time in the city / residents or a strong interest in Chinese culture (Cantonese Opera, Chinese art from the Ming, Song and Tang eras). It is also the opportunity to discover Sha Tin, the Ten Thousand Buddha Monsatery and take a walk along the Shing Mun river.

Key positive

Some nice art pieces and the exhibit on Cantonese Opera is quite unique

Free of charge and seldom crowded

Key negative

Takes about 50' to get there from Kowloon / Central

Nothing truly spectacular and may not be worth a trip by itself if you have limited time to spare

Suitability

All age groups should find something of interest (there is a Children's discovery room) There is a lift access so suitable for visitors with reduced mobility.
