Long Ke Wan beach

Sai Kung Man Yee Road, Sai Kung, New Territories

Description

Long Ke Wan is one of Hong Kong's nicest beaches (sand is pretty white and the water clear) - flanked by hills on all sides. It is located at the beginning of stage 2 of the MacLehose trail, in the Sai Kung Peninsula. There are no buildings / shops or restaurants there.

Access & Transport

The easiest but more expensive way to get to the beach is by boat from Sai Kung (25' ride and about HKD150/person one way). Alternatively, take a taxi from Sai Kung or Pak Tam Chug until the end of the East Dam (where the Geopark is) and walk 20' (mostly downhill on the way to the beach, quite the opposite on the way back...).

Instructions & Recommendations

It's the beach and the sun can be strong in Hong Kong, so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and plenty of water as you will not be able to resupply after Sai Kung or Pak Tam Chung. To cut down on cost, but still be efficient, it might be a good idea to go by taxi to the Geopark, visit it, walk down to the beach and return by boat to Sai Kung.

Meta review

Although it is quite a popular activity with HK residents, this beach flies a little under the radar of most visitors due to its location. The reviews are however very positive, and it often features in magazines. The only recurring negative comment is that the beach and water are not always pristine.

Environmental & Social

Hardly any carbon footprint (only the transport to get there) since it is all natural. Socially neutral

Conclusion

Long Ke Wan makes for a wonderful day out (or long half day) and is highly recommended along with the UNESCO Geopark and a visit of Sai Kung, for those with at least 5 days in HK, repeat visitors and residents. It is the opportunity to discover a side of the territory which is in stark contrast to Central / Causeway Bay and Kowloon

Key positive

The beach looks very good with clear waters

Seldom crowded

Key negative

Takes some time and money to get there

Sometimes too many boats (weekends during summer holidays) just off the beach

Suitability

Kids / family friendly with clean sand and few waves (generally). Access involves a long section of steep stairs or a boat ride but no pontoon so not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
