Sai Kung town

Man Nin Street, Sai Kung, New Territories

Description

Sai Kung town was established as a market town for the surrounding villages in the Sai Kung Peninsula around the beginning of the 20th century and still serves as a commercial and transport hub. The town is primarily known as the departure point for many junk / boat trips towards the Sai Kung Peninsula beach, islands and parts of the geopark. It is also quite popular for its seafood restaurants, its weekend brunches and its laid-back lifestyle

Access & Transport

The town is best accessed by bus and car/taxi, from either Tseung-Kwan-O / Clearwater Bay, Kowloon / Diamond hill or Sha Tin / Ma On Shan. Visitors looking to hike in the Sai Kung Country Park (including the first 3 sections of the MacLehose trail) will also likely need to transit through the city and possibly change bus there.

Instructions & Recommendations

We really recommend complementing a visit of the town with another activity, be it a junk trip, some sailing or a hike in the country park further out so that you get to test one of the many coffee shops or restaurants and take a leisurely stroll on the waterfront and narrow streets afterwards.

Meta review

Reviewers are generally very positive about the place although do note that many reviews are of the peninsula rather than the town itself. Visitors enjoy the big village vibe, handicrafts stores and restaurants but some point out it has slowly lost some of its charm

Environmental & Social

Some concrete and buildings but no wild over-development. Community impact has 2 sides to it: too much commercialization but it also provides economic benefits and employment opportunities to a rural area.

Conclusion

Sai Kung town is worth a stop for its village atmosphere, even though it is starting to be the victim of its own success in terms of crowd and road traffic on weekends. Visitors will get more out of it by coupling that visit with another activity rather than travelling all the way just for the town.

Key positive

The vibe is really in stark contrast to the rest of HK (excl. Cheung Chau, Lamma Island, Lantau)

Plenty of good quality restaurant and different cuisines on offer

Key negative

Traffic has become a bit painful on weekends and the place feels more commercial than 10-15yrs ago

Not hard but time consuming to get to from Kowloon and HK Island

No pretty buildings

Suitability

No restrictions
