Tai Long Wan beaches

Sai Kung Sai Wan Road, Sai Kung, New Territories

Description

Tai Long Wan bay, in the Sai Kung Country park, is a 3km stretch of coastline comprising 4 beaches: Sai Wan, Ham Tin, Tai Wan and Tung Wan (at the foot of the dominating Sharp Peak). The area is considered by many as the most beautiful place in the territory and remains very undeveloped thanks to its remote location and lack of road access. Stage 2 of the MacLehose goes through the first 2 beaches where visitors can also find some restaurants.

Access & Transport

The easiest but more expensive way to get to the beach is by boat from Sai Kung (30' ride and about HKD150/person one way). Alternatively, take a taxi from Sai Kung or Pak Tam Chug until Sai Wan Pavilion and walk about 30' (2km) to Sai Wan beach. From there, it is another 25-35mins to Ham Tin and Tai Wan beaches.

Instructions & Recommendations

It's the beach and the sun can be strong in Hong Kong so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and plenty of water as you will not be able to resupply after Sai Kung or Pak Tam Chung. To cut down on cost but still be efficient it might be a good idea to go by taxi to the Sai Wan Pavilion, walk to the beaches and then come back by boat to Sai Kung.

Meta review

The beaches are regularly featured in travel magazines and lists of what to do in Hong Kong. The pictures speak for themselves. The main issues raised by reviewers is that the beaches are not always spotless and the time it takes to get there, but this is the reason why the area is not crowded.

Environmental & Social

Hardly any carbon footprint (only the transport to get there) since it is all natural. Positive social impact as Sai Wan village survives on F&B and surf rental revenues.

Conclusion

The Tai Long Wan Bay is one of Hong Kong's most unique and beautiful sight, along with the HK Island skyline but in a diametrically opposite way! Man's creation Vs Nature. If you can spare two-thirds of a day and enjoy the outdoors, this is a great option

Key positive

Amazing vistas and picture opportunities

Seldom crowded

A few F&B options means you don't have to carry a picnic or snacks with you and can stay longer

Key negative

Takes some time and money to get there

Suitability

Suitable for anybody who enjoys time at the beach. Not as friendly as other beaches for families with younger kids because of the walk involved, unless you are taking the boat from Sai Kung both ways. For that reason, this activity is also not suitable for those with reduced mobility.
