Alster Lakes neighbourhood, Hamburg

Kennedybrücke, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

The Außenalster and Binnenalster are respectively the Outer and Inner Alster Lakes within the city of Hamburg. They are formed by the Alster river, just north of the city center. The small Inner Lake is only 0.2km2 with av. depth of 2m and was originally created as a reservoir. From its shores, there are great views over the Jungfernstieg promenade and the iconic silhouette of the City Hall. The larger Outer Lake has a surface area of 1.6 km2 and was originally outside of the city walls (hence the name). It is popular with joggers, for nautical sports, and there are several parks used for recreational purposes along its perimeter. Some of the most sought-after residential neighbourhoods are located near the lake.

Access & Transport

The Jungfernstieg train station (U2, U4, S1, S2, S3) is at the southern edge of the Inner Lake, the Hamburg Dammtor train station is just to the west of the Kennedy Bridge that separates both lakes, and the Klosterstern underground station (U1) is near the northern shore of the Outer Lake.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you enjoy running, a loop around the outer lake is a great option. Otherwise, start with a visit to Kunsthall, then walk across Lombard or Kennedy Bridge and until Planten un Blomen park.

Meta review

The Alster Lakes are a popular area of Hamburg for residents and tourists alike, and it can in fact be quite busy on sunny days. Online reviewers enjoy the views over the city, the variety of activities such as running, skating, sailing but also the restaurants and ice cream kiosks which makes it an ideal outing spot for families. Other highlights include the water fountain and the cityscape lights at night.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity to be marginally positive from an environmental standpoint, on account of the green space and trees. Socially it improves the quality of life of the surrounding neighbourhoods

Conclusion

The Alster Lakes aren't very large, but they provide a welcome outdoor option right next to the city center. If walking is not your thing, you can always take a short cruise on a ship and enjoy some of the best views of the city from there.
