Arts and Design Museum, Hamburg

Steintorplatz, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

The Museum of Art and Design Hamburg (Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg) houses an eclectic collection of sculptures, paintings and decorative arts spanning 4,000 years of human history since Antiquity. There are musical instruments, faience and porcelain, modern art from the 1914-45 period, furniture, graphic design and poster art, photographs, an Islamic section with tiles and other artefacts, and even a Japanese tea house. In addition, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions.

Access & Transport

The museum is located at Steintorplatz, next to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). There are many regional and express trains leaving from there as well as Suburban lines (S1, S2, S3) and underground lines (U1, U2, U3, U4). The nearest paid carparks are Hühnerposten and Parkplatz Steintorplatz

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with a walk along Mönckebergstraße and/or the AlsterLakes.

Meta review

The reviews for the museum ase somewhat mixed, depending on specific personal interests. There are conflicting opinons even down to the layout and organisation with some finding it haphazard whilst other commend it. That being said, most visitors do enjoy their visit, just not all of it and service is regularly mentioned as being friendly.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Arts and Design Museum of Hamburg is quite unusual in that it groups very different genres or art, and we mean that in the broadest sense. Expect to find a few collections of interest but not to be impressed by the content of every room. And if you have not yet been there and enjoy "classic art", you may want to start with Hamburger Kunsthalle, just a few mins' walk away.

Key positive

Collections spanning a wide range of periods and arts so there is something for everybody

Centrally located near public transport node

Key negative

Lack of masterpieces

Flow can feel a little random

Suitability

Suitable for all ages even though younger kids may get bored quickly. No access problem for visitors with mobility issues (lift to floors)
