Hamburger Kunsthalle

5 Glockengießerwall, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is the main art museum of Hamburg and one of the largest in Germany. It is housed in a red-brick main hall constructed in the 1860's and two connected buildings built in 1921 and 1997 respectively. The collections encompass European art, from the Middle Ages to the present day, with a focus on 1) North German painting from the 14th century, 2) Dutch, Flemish and Italian Old Masters, 3) 19th century drawings from French and German artists and 4) international modern and contemporary art. The museum also hosts several temporary exhibitions every year.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with an exploration of the nearby Alster Lakes neighbourhood(s) and/or a walk along the popular shopping street of Mönckebergstraße.

Meta review

The Kunsthall is widely recommended in travel guides and ranks high among cultural activities in Hamburg. Visitors enjoy the extensive and varied collection of paintings, in particular that of Caspar Friedrich but can feel a little short-changed (comparatively) by the modern and contemporary sections. There are positive comments regarding the architecture and atmosphere of the main building and the quality of the digital app which includes high resolution pictures.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Hamburger Kunsthalle is a high calibre museum, not quite top-tier by international standards but definitely worth a visit for travellers to Hamburg seeking cultural activities. It also has the advantages of being centrally located and housed in an impressive and well laid out historical building with 2 more recent annexes.
