International Maritime Museum, Hamburg

1 Koreastraße, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

The International Maritime Museum of Hamburg is housed in the oldest preserved warehouse of the namesake district, it was built in 1878-79 in neo-Gothic style. The museum is a private collection spanning model ships, uniforms, maritime art, letters and photographs. Highlights include a millennia-old dugout canoe found in the Elbe River, blueprints of a mid-17th century ship, letters from Admiral Nelson, a ship simulator, a lego model of the "Queen Mary 2" made of 1m Lego bricks and a copy of the "Atlantis Majoris“ from 1657 (the first nautical atlas printed in the Netherlands).

Access & Transport

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining his activity with an exploration of the surrounding Warehouse District and the nearby Prototype Museum

Meta review

The museum gets excellent online reviews but unfortunately a shocking portion of them are obviously paid-for, so it is difficult to assess what people really think of it. Clearly the fact that the museum has 9 storeys seems to be important... Overall, it seems a lot of visitors enjoy the well-organized layout and that there is something for every age, but others find it repetitive and lacking in interactive exhibits (which partially contradicts other views regarding the appropriateness for younger children).

Environmental & Social

No data available. Marginally negative from an environmental standpoint due to the energy usage (mostly electricity)

Conclusion

The museum is very topical with its warehouse district location in one of Europe's largest ports. It is also well laid out but, expect for fans of all things ships and maritime history, it might feel repetitive after 1h30-2h00. In that sense, we feel the pricing is on the high side, but it is still a venue worth visiting if you have the time to spare.

Key positive

Extensive collection

Centrally located and close to public transport

Key negative

Too many items but not enough info

Expensive entrance fees

Suitability

It is unclear whether the museum is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility (i.e. whether there is a lift to all floors) but there is a reduced price for severely handicapped persons so it should be the case
