Loki Schmidt Botanical Gardens, Hamburg

Ohnhorststraße, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

The Loki-Schmidt-Garten (a.k.a. Botanischer Garten Hamburg) is a botanical garden maintained by the University of Hamburg. It is located in the Osdorf quarter and renamed in 2012 after the environmentalist Loki Schmidt, the wife of the former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt. The park covers 25ha and is organized in 3 sections: the Geographical Garden that include an alpine garden, a Japanese garden and a Chinese garden; the Systematic Garden where plants are organized by evolutionary relationship; and Plant and man divided into five thematic areas such as poisonous and medicinal plants or Farmer's Garden.

Access & Transport

Address: Ohnhorststraße, 22609 Hamburg The Klein Flottbek train station (S1, S11) is located immediately to the south of the gardens and buses 21, 112, 115, X21 also stop there. Parking is available.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you are looking for a more central option, you can consider Planten un Blomen.

Meta review

Because it isn't centrally located, the gardens do not find their way in most of the travel guides but travellers and residents that do visit are all very complimentary. They enjoy the aesthetics and relaxed atmosphere, good maintenance, the lack of crowds and, of course, the free entrance.

Environmental & Social

A green activity. Socially neutral

Conclusion

The Loki Schmidt Botanical Gardens are an excellent option for those looking to take a break from Hamburg city centre for a couple of hours or with an interest in botany - best in springtime and summer. Had it been more centrally located it would probably have been listed in travel guides as one of the city's main attractions but then it would be too crowded and maybe not free. If you have some spare time in Hamburg (or live in the region), this is a great sunny day option.
