MS Cap San Diego

Überseebrücke, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

MS Cap San Diego is a general cargo ship turned hotel and museum moored in the Port of Hamburg. She was launched in 1962, shortly before the advent of container ships, as the last of a series of six ships known as the "white swans of the South Atlantic". Until 1981, she was running a regular schedule with South America and was bought back by the city to save it from scrapping in 1986. She was restored by enthusiasts and laid-off workers and is now open to the public who can discover life on board over 20 stations. The ship also hosts temporary exhibitions and cruises several times a year (mostly on the Elbe).

Access & Transport

The ship is moored at Überseebrücke (Ubersee bridge) which is accessible along the Elpromenade. Baumwall metro station (U3) is 3mins walk away, likewise for Rambachstraße, the closest bus stop. The Landungsbrücken train station has suburban train services (S1, S2, S3) and is only 600m away.

Instructions & Recommendations

If you are staying in the hotel overnight, you will have complimentary access to the museum. We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Warehouse District and/or the Old Elbe Tunnel

Meta review

The ship is popular with visitors who enjoy the freedom to roam and discover most of the ship, going up and down steep ladders, walking through the cargo holds; for many the vast engine room is the most interesting section. There are also positive comments about the digital guided tour. Some reviewers do note, however, that if you have already visited a ship museum before this one won't feel that exceptional as the novelty effect won't come into play.

Environmental & Social

Hardly any environmental impact (limited to electricity and heating in winter) Helps preserve some of the city's and shipping heritage

Conclusion

It is not every day you will get the opportunity to explore a cargo ship, ship museums are generally sailing ships and much smaller with no engine (!). Whether you are a boat buff or not, we do think it is worth discovering the inside workings, layouts and lifestyle of seafarers - especially when visiting one of the largest harbour cities in the world.

Key negative
