Planten un Blomen, Hamburg

Dag-Hammarskjöld-Platz, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

Planten un Blomen is a 45ha urban park with wide lawns, flower beds and small lakes with water fountains. It is part of a green belt that surrounded the center of Hamburg after the remparts were destroyed in the early 19th century (because they were no longer useful). There are some sculptures and several areas such as the Rose Garden and the Old Botanical Garden which includes a Japanese Garden with teahouse. The park is a popular recreation ground for residents; in the summer months there are water light shows, music and public children's theatre performances. In the winter, there is an ice rink.

Access & Transport

The park is located 400m to the northwest of Binnenalster (the Outer Alster Lake) and next to the Hamburg Dammtor train station with regional, express and suburban services (S3, S11, S21, S31). It is also next to Stephansplatz underground (U1) and bus station with more bus stops along Edmund-Siemers-Allee. and St Peterburg Str. Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with the Museum of Ethnology (1km to the north) and/or a walk around the Alster Lakes area.

Meta review

The park is seldom considered as one of the city's highlights in travel guides and blogs but get some of the best rating on online review portals. Visitors enjoy the free and multiple access all around the gardens, the well-cared for plants and flowers and the many unique gardens with interesting sculptures and buildings/attractions such as the Japanese tea house. There are a few comments regarding lack of parking space and seating options but those are infrequent.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity to be positive from an environmental standpoint, on account of the green space and trees. Positive for local residents as well

Conclusion

The Planten un Blomen is a truly pleasant outdoor option in Hamburg's city centre. Travellers to the city should mostly be attracted by the Old Botanical Gardens area with its various themes and deco whilst residents can enjoy the wide grassy areas and other activities to relax or play with children
