St. Michael's Church, Hamburg

1 Englische Planke, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

St. Michael's Church was originally constructed as a Protestant church in the late 17th century, but it was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1750 and rebuilt in 1786 in the current Baroque design. The Lutheran church had to be rebuilt twice though, once after a fire and the other after the WW2 bombings. In terms of architecture, the building is notable for its clock tower with a 132m high spire and an observation deck 106m above ground level. Inside, highlights include the marble pulpit, the pipe organs, the altar with three sections and the crypt where many wealthy families from Hamburg acquired graves in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Access & Transport

Address: Engl. Planke 1, 20459 Hamburg Michaeliskirche bus stop is next to the memorial and the Stadthausbrücke suburban train station (S1, S2, S3) is 700m to the east. The closest metro station is Baumwall (U3), 600m south. Parking is permitted for two hours in the nearby car park at Zeughausmarkt.

Meta review

The church is popular attraction in the city and gets excellent reviews on account of both the panoramic views from the observation deck in the clock tower and its richly decorated interior, a rare occurrence in Northern Germany.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Fees & donations help preserve this historic building, part of the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

St. Michaelis stands out among the churches of Hamburg and even the surrounding region, not just for its remarkable spire but also due to its refined and slightly flamboyant interior, in particular the altar and pulpit. It might not be worth a dedicate drive from outside the city but travellers in Hamburg should include it in their itinerary.
