St. Michael's Church, Hamburg - by Management
Description
St. Michael's Church was originally constructed as a Protestant church in the late 17th century, but it was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1750 and rebuilt in 1786 in the current Baroque design. The Lutheran church had to be rebuilt twice though, once after a fire and the other after the WW2 bombings. In terms of architecture, the building is notable for its clock tower with a 132m high spire and an observation deck 106m above ground level. Inside, highlights include the marble pulpit, the pipe organs, the altar with three sections and the crypt where many wealthy families from Hamburg acquired graves in the 18th and 19th centuries.
