St. Nikolai Memorial

60 Willy-Brandt-Straße, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

St. Nikolai Memorial consists of a WWII memorial and museum housed among the ruins of the bombed Church of St. Nicholas in Hamburg. The original 14th-century church was destroyed by fire in 1842 and the new building designed by architect George Gilbert Scott was for a brief time (1874-76) the tallest in the world. The structured was partially destroyed during Operation Gomorrah carried out by the Allied Forces in 1943, leaving only the spired tower and the crypt. The permanent exhibits are divided into four areas focusing on the following topics: the history of St Nikolai, war in Hamburg from 1933 to 1943, Operation Gomorrah and its consequences (1943-45), and the commemoration of the Hamburg air raids. A lift also takes visitors to a viewing platform, 75m high inside the spire.

Access & Transport

Address: Willy-Brandt-Straße 60, 20457 Hamburg The U Rödingsmarkt (Großer Burstah) bus station is only 100m away and Rödingsmarkt metro station (U3) less than 200m away. Stadthausbrücke train station (S1, S2, S3) is 500m to the west across Alsterfleet canal.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with an exploration of the Alster Lakes, the Mönckebergstraße shopping area and/or the Hamburger Kunsthalle (art museum).

Meta review

The memorial & museum have excellent reviews highlighting the quality of the presentation with good maps and timelines that can hold one's interest anywhere from half an hour to two hours. Visitors also enjoy the views from the platform and the fact that the documents are in both German and English.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Socially it is positive as it combines architectural preservation and educational content

Conclusion

The museum & memorial are under the radar for most visitors to the city, but we think this is an excellent attraction that brings together architecture, history of the city during WW2 (it is not all about the warehouses and the port), and panoramic views. Given the central location we strongly recommend a stop there.
