Tierpark Hagenbeck, Hamburg

2 Lokstedter Grenzstraße, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

The Tierpark Hagenbeck is located to the north-west of Hamburg city and was one of the very first zoological parks to use open enclosures surrounded by moats instead of barred cages. There are nearly 2,000 animals from all continents, including an 'Arctic Ocean" area with animals from the North and South Pole regions such as penguins and polar bears. Some show feedings are held several times a day (between 11h and 15h) and there are also children's playgrounds.

Access & Transport

Address: Lokstedter Grenzstraße 222527, Hamburg The Hagenbecks Tierpark metro station (U2) serves the Zoo & Aquarium. Bus is also an option (22, X22, 181, 281, 391, 392). By car, use BAB 7 (Elbe Tunnel) and exit Stellingen. There is a limited number of parking spaces available in the immediate vicinity of the zoo (for a fee). In the summer season, the Gazellenkamp car park, directly opposite the Gazellenkamp entrance, is also open The visitor paths throughout the zoo are suitable for wheelchair users. The aquarium is also accessible, except to the tunnel passage.

Instructions & Recommendations

For those interested, the Hagenbeck Tropical Aquarium is currently home to over 13,000 fishes from more than 350 exotic and partly endangered species from all over the world. There are 19 seawater and 10 freshwater tanks, including the 14m-long Great Shark Atoll. Separate ticket and entrance fee applies.

Meta review

The zoo is one of the city's most popular attractions, for families in particular. Visitors generally spend between 2 and 3 hours and frequently rate is as one of the best in Europe - although it is a question mark how many of those they have visited. The highlight seems to be the Arctic Ocean sector with the walruses, penguins and polar bears. The main complaint is, without question, the steep entry price.

Environmental & Social

The zoo participates in national and international breeding programs. It also continuously invests in energy saving improvements and received the B.A.U.M. Environmental Award for innovative and sustainable construction in 2009. Details here: https://www.hagenbeck.de/de/tierpark/tierpark/artenschutz.php

Conclusion

The Hagennbeck zoo is one of the best non-cultural / historical attractions in the city and makes for an excellent family half-day excursion. There is wide range of species and the polar section will be the highlight for most; however keeping animals in enclosures and in unsuitable climates is an ethical issue that potential visitors will need to weigh beforehand.
