U-Boat Museum, Hamburg

10 Sankt Pauli Fischmarkt, Hamburg, Hamburg

Description

The U-Bootmuseum is a submarine reconverted into a museum moored in the Port of Hamburg. It is referred to as U-434 but is actually a 90m long, Tango-class submarine of the Soviet and Russian navies launched in 1976 and decommissioned in 2002 with some of the technical equipment and weapon systems removed before being brought to its current site. This and the further cut-out made to accommodate the entry and exit of visitors means the submarine can no longer dive and operate. The visited sections include the Torpedo room, command center, accommodation rooms, and the engine / machine rooms.

Access & Transport

The U-343 is moored at St. Pauli fish market, about 2km west of the Warehouse district / HafenCity. Fischauktionshalle bus stop (111) is 250m away, Reeperbahn (S1, S2, S3) 700m and Landungsbrücken station (U3, S1, S2, S3) 1.1km.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with the Alter Elbtunnel or, further afield in the Altona district, the Museumshafen Oevelgönne (open-air Harbour Museum).

Meta review

The U-Boat museum is relatively popular and gets good (but not exceptional) reviews. Visitors mostly enjoy the novelty of it but wish there was more info made available inside or more frequent guided tours. Many reviewers also commented that the price also feels a little steep considering the visit only takes about 25mins.

Environmental & Social

Re-purposing of a military vehicle. We deem this attraction environmentally neutral. Some educational aspect (around sub tech)

Conclusion

The submarine visit is definitely worthwhile if you have never been in one. Value isn't great but price isn't completely unreasonable; the problem is that capacity is limited and having descriptive boards in each room would create unmanageable bottlenecks so memorize / take pictures and read the info on the website afterwards to get the most out of it.

Key positive

Original visit

Key negative

Expensive considering duration of visit

Lack of info in the ship itself

Suitability

Because of the narrow space in the submarine, the visit is not recommended for people with physical limitations (not possible for wheelchair users) and those suffering from claustrophobia.
