Chateau De Rochechouart

Place du Château, Rochechouart, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Description

The Château de Rochechouart mostly dates from the 15th century (the dungeon is from the 12th century) and belonged to the vicomte de Rochechouart, a branch of the vicomtes de Limoges, until it was bought by the department in the 1830s. The castle has strong Renaissance architectural lines with some Gothic elements. It now houses the Contemporary art museum of Haute-Vienne that exhibits a wide range of artists and also owns a large collection of work by and archives from Dadaist artist Raoul Hausmann who lived in the region after fleeing Germany in the 1930s.

Access & Transport

Rochechouart is 40km due west of Limoges (N141/D675) or a 60 mins drive from Angoulême. The closest train station is Saint-Junien, 15 mins away. There is a parking area next to the entrance.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with the Oradour sur Glane Memory Center and the Cassinomagus Archaeological Park (only 5km away).

Meta review

Not a well-known castle or museum and the online reviews are mostly consistent: the exterior is gorgeous and the renovation works impressive but the content of the museum much less so, even for those receptive to contemporary art. Somehow, there are recurring comments about the use of the castle to house a museum, which is a little startling.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the city's architectural heritage and spreads the arts

Conclusion

Nice to see if you happen to be in the area but feel free the skip the interior if you already know contemporary art is not your cup of tea, though the admission fee is so affordable that it is worth checking it out.

Key positive

The exterior of the castle is very picturesque

Low admission price

Key negative

Mediocre quality of the contemporary art collection

Suitability

Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (lift & ramps)
