Description
Fort Queyras is a 13th century fortified castle located in the village of Château-Ville-Vieille, in the French Southern Alps. Its role was to protect the Haut-Dauphiné region against invading forces from the County of Savoy or Provence. At the turn of the 18th century, it was inspected and further strengthened by Vauban (the military engineer). It lost its military purpose after WW2.
Access & Transport
The fort is in Château-Ville-Vieille. The closest train station is in Mont-Dauphin, 30km, on the Marseille to Briançon line. By car, it is 60km from Briançon, 80km from Gap and 260km from Marseille.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit there with a drive or hike through the Queyras National Park and going up the famous Col d'Izoard for the fantastic scenery.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Tourism helps preserve the region's architectural heritage and bring some economic activity to the village
Conclusion
If you are already planning to visit the Southern Alps and the Briançon / Queyras area, then Fort Queyras would be an enjoyable addition to your itinerary. If not, they are better and more accessible options.
Key positive
Not busy and good explanatory boards
The complex is quite impressive
Key negative
Many rooms not renovated / not much furnishing
Not cheap considering the size & content
Suitability
Suitable for all ages. We think visitors with reduced mobility would be authorized to use the road up to the entrance but beyond that they will not be able to access the various levels because of the stairs.
