Domaine de Sceaux

8 Avenue Claude Perrault, Sceaux, Île-de-France

Description

The Domaine de Sceaux comprises 2 Châteaux and a landscaped park (181ha). The larger Château de Sceaux was built in the 17th century for Colbert, Louis XIV's minister of finance and the park was designed by Le Nôtre. The Petit Château houses the Domaine départemental de Sceaux museum which contains a collection of over 700 paintings and drawings focused on the region, including from the School of Paris.

Access & Transport

The easiest way to get there from Paris is by RER B until either of the following stops: Sceaux, Bourg la Reine or Parc de Sceaux. By car, from Paris exit from Porte d'Orleans and take the D920 or from the periphery exit the A86 towards Sceaux (exit 27). There is free parking onsite

Instructions & Recommendations

The park is open year-round, but timing change every month based on sunrise and sunset times. The museum is generally open in the afternoons and the Orangerie only on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Meta review

Although it is not very famous outside of the Ile de France region, probably because of the heavy competition coming from other domaines and Chateaux in France (including nearby Versailles), the reviews are excellent. Visitors highlight the diversity of paths, some manicured and others a little more "natural" as well as the large size of the park which means it never feels crowded except on sunny weekends afternoons when Parisians find their way there. Other draws include the water features and fountains and the cherry blossom in April if you are lucky. As for the museum, opinions are that it is nice for those who enjoy art but quite small.

Environmental & Social

The Domaine is managed by the department (Hauts de Seine) and follows strict environmental policies looking to ensure the sustainability of the estate and surrounding ecosystems. Socially, this attraction helps preserve the regional architectural and natural heritages. It also provides high quality green spaces for the local residents

Conclusion

The Domaine de Sceaux in the perfect half day outing from Paris for those looking for a walk in a picturesque environment (no forest here though). In our opinion, it has just the right size, i.e. one can look around and enjoy the uninterrupted perspectives, but it is fairly easy to cover the whole area in just over 2h, which makes it appropriate for families as well.
