La Vallée aux Loups

102 Rue de Chateaubriand, Châtenay-Malabry, Île-de-France

Description

The Vallée-aux-Loups is an estate located in Châtenay-Malabry, in the department of the Hauts de Seine, to the south of Paris. It comprises the former house of the French writer Chateaubriand and an arboretum. The house was purchased by François-René de Chateaubriand in the early 19th century, and he lived there from 1807 to 1818; it consists of three buildings with period furniture that can be visited. The arboretum is laid out as a landscaped park (reminiscent of Japanese gardens with a pond, island, and bridges) organized in several gardens including about 2500 plants and over 150 species of trees.

Access & Transport

From downtown Paris, the easiest way to get there it by RER B until Robinson station (the terminus) and walk 20mins / 1.5km. By car, take the A-86 exit 28 for Châtenay-Malabry until the Salvador Allende roundabout Direction info: https://vallee-aux-loups.hauts-de-seine.fr/infos-pratiques/les-acces-aux-domaine

Instructions & Recommendations

The Domaine de Sceaux is nearby and could easily be combined for a full day outing but may feel a little redundant for some

Meta review

This attraction is low key; being operated by the department it is not being heavily advertised so most visitors get impressed on the upside. The reviews highlight the colourful landscape, especially in the spring, the pond with beautiful trees and the bonsai collection. "Stunning "is an adjective used repeatedly. The house also draws positive comments for being well decorated with good taste in (authentic) period furniture. Those who like the writing of Chateaubriand also enjoy discovering the desk at which he sat to write when living there.

Environmental & Social

A green activity. Socially, it provides an enjoyable environment to residents and helps preserve the region's cultural and historical heritages.

Conclusion

The Vallee aux Loups is one of those gems one gets to discover during regional itineraries and slow travel: it is peaceful, picturesque and relaxing, easy to get to and genuinely interesting (the perfect opportunity to learn more about Chataubriand).
