Plage du Grand Travers

2 Rue du Levant, La Grande-Motte, Occitanie

Description

With dunes and pinewood at its back, Plage du Grand Travers is the largest and wildest beach in La Grand Motte, on the windy Mediterranean shore between Montpellier and the Camargue / Rhone delta. The beach has a Blue Flag rating, some infrastructure such as lifeguards, showers, and toilets and the waters are classified as a Natura 2000 site (a EU nature protection area). Dogs and kitesurf are authorised around access 60.

Access & Transport

The beach is 3km west of the marina in La Grande Motte and 18km southwest of Montpellier with easy road access via a dedicated exit on the D62. The beach is also accessible via a cycling track.

Instructions & Recommendations

It's the beach and the sun can be strong so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and some water. Nearby attractions include the Cathédrale de Maguelone and, going the other way, Seaquarium du Grau-du-Roi and the amusement park of Amigoland (only open in the evenings during the summer).

Meta review

One of the most popular beaches around Montpellier, beachgoers describe it as very wide, quite clean, and shallow so that it is a good option for families with young children. There is plenty of parking spaces along the road (some of them are free) but in the peak summer season it can still fill up - in fact the many regulars seem to avoid that period of the year.

Environmental & Social

Reasonable infrastructure and low carbon footprint. No negative social impact.

Conclusion

Not perfect but there is little not to like and no obvious flaw with commercial encroachment that is limited by Mediterranean standards + it is easy to get to from Montpellier or the centre of La Grande Motte.

Key positive

Good quality sand and water

Very long and still a little wild despite some useful infrastructure

Key negative

Gets busy in the summer

Suitability

Kids / family-friendly with limited waves in the summer. There are 2 accesses for wheelchair users (#50 and 59). In other places, they will need assistance but the sand is a short distance from the parking spots
