Zoo de Montpellier

50 Avenue Agropolis, Montpellier, Occitanie

Description

Montpellier Zoo is set in the Parc de Lunaret and houses hundreds of animals from various ecosystems globally; it is complemented by the 10ha Réserve du Lez next to it. Some of the highlights include the giraffes, cheetahs, Asian lion, wolves, zebra, red ibis, tapir and wallabies.

Access & Transport

The zoo is located 3.5km north of the city centre, at 50 avenue Agropolis. There are several car park options on Av. du Val de Montferrand, Av. du Vert-Bois, and Av. Agropolis. By public transport, take the tram line #1 until 'Universités des sciences et des lettres' and then transfer to the bus shuttle B until the 'Zoo' stop. Note that the zoo is only partially accessible to visitors with reduced mobility: only the upper section and not the area near the lions or some of the trails.

Instructions & Recommendations

The Amazonian greenhouses has now been closed for several years and, at the time of this review, there was no plan for its reopening.

Meta review

The zoo has been receiving not-so-positive press over the last few years and its financial situation is leading to a decrease in the number of animals and the shuttering of some enclosures but, with that background in mind, many online reviewers state that it still makes for a decent visit, especially considering that admission is free. They highlight the presence of "big game" such as lions, camels, rhinos and giraffes, quite a lot of shaded areas and children playground. Frequent disappointed comments at the closure of the Amazonian greenhouse.

Environmental & Social

Quite a green environment. The zoo tries to paint itself with some conservation credentials but any NGO support is actually financed by the municipality (https://zoo.montpellier.fr/preserver-elever)

Conclusion

A zoo that has seen better days but still can offer a good experience for families. And since it is free, value is excellent. Works best for residents and those with a spare half-day in town.
