Doñana National Park - by Helen63 on Google
Description
The Doñana National Park has 135km2 of protected area (the natural reserve covers 543 km2) in south-western Andalucía. It consists of marshes with shallow streams and sand dunes around the Guadalquivir delta. There is a rich and varied ecosystem with thousands of migratory birds, deer, mongooses, and some endangered species such as the Iberian lynx and the Spanish imperial eagle. The best way to discover the park and access some of the protected areas is with a tour; the one reviewed here lasts 3h30-4h00 hours and is operated by Doñana Reservas out of the village of El Rocio in a vehicle with capacity of up to 30pax. The itinerary includes a visit of the village, forest and marshes in the northern area of the park (Pinares de Coto del Rey, Matasgordas cork oaks, Marisma de Hinojos) and a stop at the José A. Valverde Visitors Centre. Binoculars are provided for every 2 visitors.
Access & Transport
Address: Avenida de la Canaliega, 21750 El Rocio, Almonte (Huelva) From Seville, take the A-49 motorway towards Huelva until exit number 48 and follow signs for Almonte-Doñana. From Huelva, take the A-49 and exit 50 towards Almonte-Doñana or use the coastal road A-494 eastward to Matalascañas, and then continue north on the A-483 about 15 km further to El Rocío. The operator has a vehicle adapted for disabled and reduced mobility passengers. It is available upon request at least 3 days in advance.
Instructions & Recommendations
Departure time for afternoon tours varies depending on the season. We suggest combining this activity with the visit of the El Rocio Hermitage.
Environmental & Social
The reserve has an obvious conservation objective and the carbon footprint related to transport is moderate. Helps small and independent operators
Conclusion
A guided exploration of the Doñana National Park will surely satisfy nature and animal lovers and those that may be a little tired of all the beautiful Andalusian cities and monuments (!). The tour is a little long and fairly priced, unlikely to provide much by way of thrills but definitely educational.
