Description

The Gruta de las Maravillas (Grotto of the Marvels) is located in the heart of the town of Aracena, in the northeast of Huelva Province, Andalusia. It was discovered at the end of the 19th century and was the first cave open to tourists in Spain in 1914. The underground complex is 2,130m long, of which 1,400m can be visited, and comprises multiple halls. Visitors can see various karst and crystalline formations such as aragonites, coralloids, eccentric stalactites, stalagmites, and striped curtains. The tours lasts 45mins and are conducted in Spanish with English audio-guides for those who wish.

Access & Transport

Aracena is 90km northwest of Seville on the A-66 then exit 782 for the N-433. From Huelva, it is 100km north on the N-435 then A-461 followed by A-479 The entrance is in the centre of town, on Calle Pozo de la Nieve.

Instructions & Recommendations

The temperature inside is around 16-19°C. It is highly recommended to book online ahead of time to ensure availability of slots (visits are limited to 1,000 per day). The town of Aracana also has a Ham Museum and a fortified complex that can be visited.

Online reviews for the caves are mostly excellent with many visitors stating that although it is easy to think of caves being similar, each is different and this one is likely to surprise across its several rooms. The eccentric stalactites and underwater formations in particular get singled out.
