La Rabida Monastery - by Miguel Ángel (CC BY-SA 3.0)
Description
The Monastery of La Rábida is a Franciscan friary built between the 13th and 15th century, the dominant architectural styles are Gothic and Moorish revival. It is located 10km south of the city of Huelva, at the confluence of the Tinto and Odiel rivers. The name comes from the previous structure located there: a ribat, which means "watchtower" in Arabic. Visitors can also discover the cloister and a museum with relics of the discovery of the Americas. There is indeed an historical link as Christopher Columbus was staying there during the period when he was trying to pitch his proposal to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Entrance fee includes an audio-guide in several languages
Access & Transport
The monastery is next to the Botanic Garden Jose Celestino Mutis and the campus of Universidad Internacional de Andalucía. To reach, the easiest is to drive south from Huelva city on the N-442 across the Rio Tinto and exit immediately afterwards on the A-5025. Coming from Seville, take exit 75 on the A-49 heading towards Moguer and Palos de la Frontera.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the city of Huelva with its long Tinto Wharf and / or some time at the beach around Matalascañas
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral and helps preserve the region's architectural and historical heritage.
Conclusion
This isn't a well-known monument, perhaps because as a structure it isn't particularly impressive, but it definitely has some cultural value, both artistic and historical. If you are in the province of Huelva and looking for a cultural activity, this is an option worth considering.
