Matalascañas beach, Huelva

Sector N, Matalascañas, Andalucía

Description

Matalascañas is a popular set of beaches and a seaside resort located in the province of Huelva, in southwestern Andalusia. The 7km long strip of golden sand is on average 80m wide and has a landmark called Torre la Higuera, an upside-down defence tower.

Access & Transport

The resort is about 45km southeast of the city of Huelva, along the coastal A-494. From Sevilla, it is 90km along the A-49 and exit 48 onto the A-483 until you reach.

Instructions & Recommendations

The beach and the sun can be strong here so don't forget the usual protective equipment (hat/cap, "green" sunblock, sunglasses, slippers) and some water. Other nearby activities include the city of Huelva, the Doñana National Park and the village of El Rocio with its Hermitage.

Meta review

Mostly good online reviews and popular with Sevillians in particular. For most visitors, the main draws are the beach size which means it is aways possible to find some space, the good sand quality and the "blue flag" status. There are some mixed comments relating to how clear the water is (probably depends on recent weather and currents), the fact that some of the infrastructure such as toilets is paying and the expensive parking cost.

Environmental & Social

Low carbon footprint but a lot of residential developments. Insufficient info to ascertain social & community impact

Conclusion

Matalascañas is a good beach option for anybody visiting or living in the Huelva or Seville region but it is not a "destination" beach. The good infrastructure and lack of waves make it attractive to families in particular. If you are looking for more virgin spaces, head east into the Doñana natural park
