Tinto Wharf, Huelva

Puente Pt Muelle Levante, Huelva, Andalucía

Description

The Tinto Wharf (Muelle del Tinto) is a dry bulk dock turned promenade over the Odiel river in the city of Huelva in Andalusia. The 1,165m long structure was built in 1874-76 and operated until 1975 by the mining company Rio Tinto for loading ore from its mines in the region. Cleverly, the movement of wagons used gravity: the railway line for loaded wagons starts at a higher point of the jetty and slopes down to the end of the pier and then slopes down again on the way back on a parallel line that ends below the original starting point.

Access & Transport

Address: calle Presidente Adolfo Suárez in Huelva The pier is walking distance from the city centre (1km to the southwest) and from the train station (1.5km to the west).

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a walk through the centre of the city and a stop at the La Rabida Monastery, a 10-15mins drive away.

Meta review

The structure gets mostly the thumbs up as an original and enjoyable location for a walk. The recent upgrade in infrastructure with the addition of public toilets, a couple of cafes but more importantly coloured LED lighting makes it attractive both during the day and at night. The only recurring negative comments relate to the disappointing upkeep and the fact that the pier is split in 2 sections due to the widening of an intersecting road a few years back.

Environmental & Social

Repurposing of an existing infrastructure for the benefit of the local residents (and visitors) and use of LEDs

Conclusion

Not an attraction worth a significant detour but if you happen to be in the area, it is definitely worth stopping by and enjoy a casual walk. Early morning and evening probably the best time in terms of weather and lighting

Key positive

Original and smart repurposing

Quite photogenic

Key negative

-

Suitability

Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility through the lower ramp (would require assistance to go up without reaching the end of the pier)
