Description

The Redwood National and State Parks are located along the coast of Northern California and are the site of the most important acreage of old-growth coast redwood - the tallest on the planet. Redwood NSP actually consists of 4 parks: Redwood NP, Del Norte Coast SP, Jedediah Smith SP and Prairie Creek SP. The tallest tree in the world - Hyperion at 116m - is located in Redwood NP. There are over 300km of trails across the parks and, besides hiking, mountain biking and kayaking (along the river and the coastline) are also popular.

Access & Transport

Redwood NSP is generally oriented along the north-south U.S. 101 highway corridor between Crescent City and Orick. It is a 500km/6h drive north of San Francisco and close to the border with Oregon. Instructions & Recommendations

Visitors should be prepared for cool and damp weather. Dress in layers and expect to get wet. There is very limited cellular coverage across the parks.

A regular feature on the must-see list of California tavel guides, online reviews are likewise suggesting this is one of the best destinations in Northern California. Visitors coming totally expecting tall trees but they comment being amazed at the variety of the landscapes with 'meadows and mountains, creek valleys and shorelines' as well as scenic drives. This is topped up by the sighting of elks and the sensation of peacefulness when walking among the giant sequoias.

Those who make the drive to Redwood NP and its sister State Parks will be amply rewarded by a wide range of scenery, from giant trees to meadows and wild coastlines. Make sure you spend some time hiking at least a couple of trails - for those with enough time, a couple of half-day visits might be the way to go.
