Description
The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is the largest of Istanbul's hundreds of underground water reservoirs. It was built in the 6th century next to where a basilica once stood (now next to Hagia Sophia) shortly after the Nika riots of 532 during which nearly half the city was burned or destroyed. It was mostly used as a water filtration system for the Great Palace of Constantinople and later the Topkapi Palace. The chamber is 138x65m with a capacity of 80,000m3 and is supported by 336 (12x28) marble columns mostly carved in Ionic and Corinthian styles, two of which sport the sculpted visage of Medusa at their base.
Access & Transport
The cistern is located between Hagia Sophia and Sultanhamet Square, walking distance from many historical attractions. The Sultanhamet tram station (T1) is 100m away. Access is by a staircase (52 steps) but there is a wheelchair platform lift at the exit on Alemdar street.
Instructions & Recommendations
There are other cisterns in the area however so, alternatively, we would suggest visiting one of those: Şerefiye Sarnici (Theodosius Cistern) and 1001 Direk Sarnici (Cistern of Philoxenos).
Environmental & Social
No environmental impact and helps preserve the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
The Basilica Cistern is the opportunity to take some great pictures and learn about the Istanbul water reserve and filtration systems. It is expensive though but there are other cisterns that can be visited within walking distance - not quite as good but still worth your time.
