Description
The Chora Church (or Kariye Mosque) is a medieval Greek orthodox church known for its mosaics and frescoes. The original 4th century church was built outside of Constantinople's city walls as part of a monastery (the church's full name roughly means "The Church of the Holy Redeemer in the Fields"), but it was essentially incorporated in the city defensive structure under Theodosius II (413-414). It had to be reconstructed several times and the current decoration mostly dates from the 14th century. All three sections of the church (the entrance hall or narthex, the nave and the side chapel) contain mosaics and frescoes depicting the lives of Christ, the Virgen Mary and scenes from the Old Testament.
Access & Transport
The mosque is in the Edirnekapi neighbourhood of the western part of the Fatih district. The Edirnekapi tram station (T4) is 400m away and there are plenty of buses along Fevzi Paşa Cd. Alternatively, it is a 1km walk to the Balat ferry and tram stop (&5) along the Golden horn shore.
Instructions & Recommendations
The building has been turned back into a mosque a few years ago and finally reopened after a lengthy closure. There is a section of the Walls of Constantinople almost right beside the monument.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Part of the city's architectural and artistic heritage.
Conclusion
The Karye Kami / Chora Church isn't that well now in the city with multiple spectacular mosques and palaces but those keen or the religious history and art will really enjoy this gem - whenever it reopens.
Key positive
Rare example of well-preserved Christian religious art in Istanbul
Some gorgeous mosaics
Key negative
Not many other tourist sites around besides the Constantinople Wall
Suitability
It is unclear if the monument is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
