Description
Küçüksu Pavilion was a summer residence used by the Ottoman sultans mostly for short stays during hunting trips. It lays upstream from Istanbul along the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, close to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (the 2nd Bosphorus Bridge). It was commissioned by Sultan Abd-ul-Mejid I and designed in neo-Baroque style by the Balyan architects (father & son) in the 1850's and the sea-facing facade was embellished further in the following decades. The building has two floors plus a basement and is surrounded by cast iron railings.
Access & Transport
The Pavilion is about 1km south of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge. There are no public transport options besides buses/minibus from Üsküdar. There is a carpark opposite the monument.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Rumeli Fortress on the opposite shore.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral except for the electricity consumption. Visits help preserve the city's cultural and architectural heritage
Conclusion
The Küçüksu Pavilion is a nice addition to those with spare time in the city and keen on architectural attractions. It is also the perfect excuse to discover the Asian side of the Bosphorus beyond Üsküdar - best to think about it this way and plan your route accordingly rather than as a destination unto itself.
Key positive
Beautiful facade and waterside setting
Not crowded
Key negative
Quite small
A little time consuming to get to and limited public transport options
Suitability
It is unclear if the Palace is fully wheelchair accessible, we do not think it is the case.
