Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum

12 Atmeydanı Caddesi, Binbirdirek, İstanbul

Description

The Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum collection includes Islamic calligraphy, rugs / carpet art, tiles, over 17,000 manuscripts and 3,000 Qur’ans. In addition, the first floor is dedicated to ethnographic displays on various cultures in Turkey. It is housed in the ceremony hall of the former palace of Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha who was the second grand vizier to Suleiman the Magnificent.

Access & Transport

The museum is located across Sultanahmet Square from the Blue Mosque, 200m away from Sultanahmet tram station (T1).

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with Sultanahmet Square / Hippodrome of Constantinople, the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia and keep Topkapi Palace + Istanbul Archaeology Museums for another day

Meta review

Most visitors are positively surprised, expecting an art museum but instead getting a full historical overview about the country with a wealth of decorative artefacts in a well laid-out chronological fashion. The carpet and Qurans get special mention as does the building, mixing old and modern designs.

Environmental & Social

Limited carbon footprint (electricity) and helps preserve the country's cultural heritage

Conclusion

The Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum provides visitors with a large number of exhibits and artefacts illustrating both the country's and Islamic arts' evolution across the centuries. Recommended for anybody looking for a cultural activity and every history buff.
