Yıldız Park

Yıldız Sokak, Etiler, İstanbul

Description

Yıldız Park is one of Istanbul's largest urban parks, it is located in the Beşiktaş district. Originally used as a hunting ground, it became part of the imperial garden of the Yildiz Palace when it was constructed in the late 19th century, during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II. The park is still surrounded by some walls and, besides the palace, it contains a variety of flowers, plants and trees gathered from various countries, several pavilions (Şale, Çadır and Malta) and a porcelain factory that can be visited.

Access & Transport

The park is close to the Beşiktaş (Dentur) ferry pier and there are several bus services along Çırağan Cd and Barbaros Blv. The Kabatas funicular (F1) and tram station (T1) are 2.5km away but, once the M7 metro line will be fully completed, there will be a Yildiz station close to the park linking it to Kabatas. There is parking available within and around the park.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Yildiz Palace and Yildiz Porcelain factory. It is also walking distance to Dolmabahçe Palace and Ortaköy Mosque (in opposite directions)

Meta review

According to online reviews, the park is gorgeous in the spring and summer and isn't crowded. It is an ideal place to sit and relax between visits or for a walk, and it is also popular with residents. It can't however be compared with any of the well-known parks in some other capitals.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity to be marginally positive from an environmental and community standpoints, on account of the green space and trees.

Conclusion

Yildiz Park makes for a nice green break in between a visit of the Dolmabahçe Palace and attractions in the Beşiktaş neighbourhood. It also has attractions in its own rights with the porcelain factory and the Yildiz Palace but somehow falls short from being a real city highlight (in our opinion).

Key positive

The Yildiz Palace multiple pavilions are visually very pleasant

Rare green space near the centre of Istanbul

Key negative

Not very large

Suitability

There are some slopes so wheelchair users may need some assistance
