Santa Catalina Castle, Jaén

Carretera al Castillo y el Neveral, Jaén, Andalucía

Description

The Castle of Santa Catalina overlooks the city of Jaén in Andalusia. Originally, an 8th century Moorish fortress stood there but after King Ferdinand III of Castile captured the city in 1246 an ew structure was built comprising five towers and a donjon. Not much of the old castle was left after the construction of a parador (luxury hotel) in the 1960's. The top of the hill is crowned by a monumental Christian cross. Trivia: General Charles de Gaulle stayed in the parador while writing his memoirs

Access & Transport

The castle is to the West of the city centre, atop the hill along Carretera al Parador.

Meta review

The star of the show here (based on online reviews) is the beautiful panorama over the town, olive groves and Jabalcuz mountain range in the distance; it is best experienced from where the gigantic cross is located. Besides, visitors note that the towers and outer walls are quite well preserved but not so for the inner sections.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral attraction. Helps preserve the region's architectural and historical heritage

Conclusion

The castle is without a doubt one of the highlights of a visit to Jaen but the draws really are the views and its history rather than what remains of the structure

Key positive

Sweeping views over town and the surrounding countryside

Key negative

Not much by way of content

Suitability

Only partially accessible for visitors with reduced mobility and they may require assistance
