Al Qudra Lakes

Al Qudra Road, Dubai, Dubai

Description

Al Qudra is a man-made lake spreading over 10ha in the Saih Al Samal desert, to the southwest of Dubai. It is home to over 100 species of birds as well as some animals such as the desert fox and the oryx. In terms of infrastructure, there is a cycling track, a few food trucks at the entrance (called the Last Exit) and some trail roads. Camping is authorised.

Access & Transport

The lake is located along Al Qudra road, about 60km (~ 1h drive) from the city centre. Bus 67 stops nearby but prior transfer is required and total journey would be in excess of 2h so best to drive or arrange for a taxi.

Instructions & Recommendations

Facilities are limited so take anything you will need with you (except for food if planning to eat at the food trucks) and do not forget to take it all back, including your trash (to keep animals healthy and the environment unpolluted). Take warm clothes for the evening (or overnight), sun block and plenty of water.

Meta review

There is a fair number of reviews but mostly from Dubai residents driving there on the weekend, for one evening or camping. Visitors are mostly positive and praise the relaxing environment but on weekends it seems it can get quite crowded and that littering is an issue.

Environmental & Social

The Qudra Lakes are aimed at developing eco-tourism in the emirate. There is extremely limited infrastructure and environmental impact. Neutral from a social aspect.

Conclusion

Al Qudra is in our view a good option for residents keen to experience the outdoors, for an evening or overnight, in a semi-controlled environment. It is a good intro to the desert and a relaxing spot, in particular on weekdays.
