Palm Springs Art Museum

101 North Museum Drive, Palm Springs, California

Description

The Palm Springs Art Museum focuses on contemporary art, sculpture and art glass. It also houses a natural science collection and acts as a performing arts institution for Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, in Riverside County, California. It started as a museum focused on the Colorado Desert natural environment and the original local Native Americans but transitioned to art in the 1950's when the current building was developed. The permanent collections are divided between Modern & Contemporary (3,000 sculptures, paintings and prints, 2,000 fine art photographs, and another 40,000 photo-based objects), Architecture & Design, Native American Art, Pre-Columbian and 'Art of the West in the Americas'.

Meta review

Surprisingly excellent online reviews for this museum. Whereas the 'average' visitor describes it as 'small but nice' and a good place to escape from the outdoor heat, modern & contemporary art enthusiasts enjoy both the building + display and the well curated content with special mentions for the art studio, the sculpture garden and the mid-century collection that just seems to 'fit with the whole Palm Springs vibe'.

Environmental & Social

Moderate environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity for lighting and A/c). It helps spread culture and the arts

Conclusion

The Palm Springs Art Museum is a very good 'regional' museum, certainly punching above its weight thanks to an appropriate building architecture and a focus on some non-mainstream themes. The artwork and artefacts exhibited there should please most art enthusiasts. We would in fact advise anybody planning to explore Palm Springs (or passing through it) to give it a go.
