Lower Kern River Rafting (Kern River Outfitters)

6602 Wofford Boulevard, Wofford Heights, California

Description

The Kern River is fed by snowmelt from Mount Whitney and drains an area of the southern Sierra Nevada, flowing through scenic canyons, making it popular for white-water rafting and kayaking. This review is for the half-day (~4h) rafting operated by Kern River Outfitters on the Lower Kern between the Granite Put-In down to Miracle which departs at 13h30. Customers will be navigating the Class II and III rapids and calm pools alongside their guide. The operator provides all safety equipment and a wetsuit All participants need to be able to swim and the minimum age is 12 years old until August 1, then 8 years old.

Access & Transport

Meeting point is at the operator's office: 6602 Wofford Blvd, Wofford Heights, CA 93285 There is a car park at the back of the building. Wofford Heights is on the north-western shore of Lake Isabella, 80km from Bakersfield.

Instructions & Recommendations

Do not leave valuables in your vehicle and lock it. Customers should bring a towel, wear a suitable attire such as swimsuit/short, t-shirts and closed shoes, a dry bag and some drinking water. Alcohol is not permitted and lunch is not included.

Meta review

We'll keep it short because there are too many fake reviews, but KRO seems to be one of the best rated operators in the area and we could not find any negative comments about the guides expertise and professionalism. Most customers genuinely seems to have had good fun in a scenic natural environment.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. This helps support small independent operators and the local rural economy

Conclusion

Rafting is definitely one of the most entertaining ways to experience the Kern River and KRO is an operator with a proven track record and excellent reviews. Unless you have a fluid budget, we would not recommend it to international travellers road-tripping through California because your money will go further on other activities and the rapids aren't exceptional by any means. This is best suited for intra-state customers as a weekend or holiday activity.
