Trail of 100 Giants - Sequoia NF

County Route 107, Tulare County, California

Description

The Trail of 100 Giants Trail (Long Meadow Grove) is located in Sequoia National Forest. It consist of a 1.4km2 grove with about 120 giant sequoias that can be visited along an interpretative trail alternating wooden boardwalk and asphalt. Noteworthy sequoias include the Proclamation Tree and Red Chief (67m in height - no trail leading to it) The grove was heavily impacted by the fires during the summer of 2021 in California, but the sequoias were saved (including thanks to firefighting operations).

Access & Transport

The trail is located on the western side of the Great Western Divide Highway (M-90/M-107), across from the Redwood Meadow Campground

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that Sequoia National Forest is just to the south of Sequoia National Park, their different names reflect their status and related regulations + they are managed separately. Check that the roads and trail are open before heading there and fill up your tank + bring a jacket as temperatures can plummet quickly. Other areas of interest nearby include the Domeland Wilderness and the Kern River + Lake Isabella.

Meta review

Excellent reviews even though the park is far less known than its neighbour Sequoia NP - and far less busy as well according to visitors who can often count the number of cars parked there on their fingers. Beyond the trees, they highlight the good maps and explanations as well as the gorgeous scenery along the road (huge boulders, forested mountains). They also clarify that this is NOT a substitute for Sequoia NP.

Environmental & Social

This is an environment friendly activity. Socially neutral

Conclusion

This one is for outdoor enthusiasts who will enjoy the area as a supplement (rather than an alternative) to the more famous but also far more visited Kings Canyon & Sequoia NP. Worth the detour when in Kern County.

Key positive

Impressive Sequoias

Not busy and affordable park fees
