Sequoia NP - Moro Rock Trail

Crescent Meadow Road, Tulare County, California

Description

Moro Rock is a granite dome in Sequoia National Park, California. The park is located in the southern Sierra Nevada and is famous for its giant sequoia trees, including the largest tree on the planet by volume: the General Sherman tree. The trail consists of a short 800m out and back (0.5 mile) with a stairway cut and poured into the rock. From the top, the views encompass much of the Sequoia NP and the Great Western Divide (which forms part of the border between the Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks and has a max. elevation of 4,208m at Mount Kaweah).

Access & Transport

There is only one road going through the national park: Generals Highway and Crescent Meadow rd is a short offshoot leading to the trail as well as to the Tunnel Log and the High Sierra trailhead. The Moro Rock Trail starts from a parking area next to Crescent Meadow rd. Moro Rock-Crescent Meadow Road is closed to private vehicles from 08h to 19h on weekends once shuttle service from Giant Forest Museum begins (Route 2). Details can be found here: https://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/parktransit.htm

Instructions & Recommendations

Best to wear footwear with decent grip, especially if the trail is wet. Note that the weather is highly variable and tire chains can be compulsory to drive into the park, depending on snowfalls (these can be rented near the park entrance). Info here: https://www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/winter_driving.htm

Meta review

This is a short and popular climb that gets good reviews although many people note that parking can fill up quickly and the staircase acts as a bottleneck so it can feel crowded. Best to go early. The views are unanimously praised.

Environmental & Social

Green activity and park entrance fees are mostly used to maintain and improve the park. Details here: https://www.nps.gov/seki/learn/management/your-fee-dollars-at-work.htm

Conclusion

If you are heading to Sequoia NP and have a spare 45mins then this is one of the best places to enjoy panoramic views over the park and the Great Western Divide. Not a destination hike, more of a viewpoint. Hopefully, it isn't too hot or cloudy so visibility is good.
