Hong Kong Space Museum

10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

Description

The Hong Kong Space Museum is an astronomy and space science museum housed in a hemisphere-shaped building that contains a planetarium (when it opened in 1980, it was the first computerized one). The focus is on the solar system, spaceflight, and cosmology. The computerized star imager in the Sky Gallery can simulate the sky through optical principles, projecting 8,000 stars onto the hemisphere screen of the Planetarium. The technology is, however, starting to feel dated.

Access & Transport

The building is located right next to Victoria Harbour, at the beginning of the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is easily accessible by public transport (bus and 2 MTR stations: East Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsim Sha Tsui) as well as with the cross-harbour Star Ferry. Next to it, visitors can also find the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Instructions & Recommendations

This attraction can be combined with a visit to the Avenue of Stars, a drink or meal at The Peninsula, or a harbour cruise.

Meta review

Reviews of the Space Museum are mostly positive on account of its educational content but a substantial portion are actually nuanced: it could do with some upgrade / renovation, it can be crowded with kids, and for a few reviewers, the dim lighting makes it difficult to read some explanations.

Environmental & Social

This type of museum is a bit power hungry, in particular for air-conditioning. Not a major carbon footprint on a per visitor basis though. Socially positive as it helps spread culture.

Conclusion

The Space Museum is a good option for families with kids looking for an indoor or educational venue. Space is a topic of interest for most people but, unfortunately, this museum has not quite kept up with the times and can be disappointing for those having visited more modern ones in other cities. As such, it is probably more a venue for residents than tourists.

Key positive

Will be of interest to kids so a good family option

Very easy to get to on Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront

Cheap entrance fee

Key negative

Not that large a museum and little exhibits / information beyond the solar system

Needs renovation and upgrading

Too many kids at times…

Suitability

Suitable for all ages - in fact, this museum is mostly geared towards families with younger kids and those with an interest in space and cosmology. Accessible to people with limited mobility
