Description
Mong Kok is one of Hong Kong's major shopping areas. It is located between prince Edward and Yau Ma Tei MTR stations with Nathan rd and Argyle rd serving as the neighbourhood's axis. It is regularly featured in movies (often with triad involvement) and is best known for being one of the busiest districts in the world with a population density estimated at 130,000 pers. / km². The neighbourhood has plenty or markets, the most famous of which is Tung Choi Street, also known as "Ladies' market" that specializes in women's clothing and cosmetics and also includes food stalls.
Access & Transport
The area is extremely easy to access by car, bus and MTR with no less than 3 lines: Kwun Tong and Tsuen Wan along the north-south axis and the East Rail line along the eastern edge. For the Ladies' market, the best is to alight at Mong Kok MTR station and take exit E2 or D3. From there, it is a 2 mins walk.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest going in the afternoon or evening when the shops and market are open to get the real vibe of the place. Keep your belongings close to you and don't forget your camera (at night you can capture all the neon lights).
Environmental & Social
The height of urbanism and consumerism with all the negative environmental and social impacts associated with it.
Conclusion
Mongkok really is an experience - a human hive of activities and some great pictures with the neon lights at night. In fact, we would recommend a visit (albeit a short one) even to those who dislike crowds and/or have no interest in shopping - just to have seen it! Ladies' market is a good option for those who enjoy this kind of shopping or the street food on offer.
Key positive
Very easy to get to / very central
Plenty of shopping and F&B options all over
Great photo opportunities
Key negative
Very very crowded
Question mark around quality in the markets
Doesn't score high on environmental and social aspects scale
Suitability
Suitable for all ages but not recommended for people suffering from agoraphobia. Persons with mobility issues might find it slow going because of the crowds but no problem otherwise.
